Visiting Artists: Joanna Powell and Jesse Ring

The KCAI ceramics department welcomed Joanna Powell and Jesse Ring this week to give lectures and critique student work. Jesse graduated from the KCAI ceramics department in 2006 and recently received his MFA degree from Alfred University. Joanna received her MFA from The University of Colorado and just finished a two year residency at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts. Both artists are currently at Kansas State – Joanna is an Artist in Residence and Jesse is working as a Project Specific Resident Artist.

Though their work takes on very different forms, Jesse and Joanna tell stories using the rich histories of their materials. Jesse’s studio practice is rooted in collage with a variety of materials. During his lecture, he talked about how he had always assumed that stories were in images, but he realized that narrative actually happens inbetween the act of telling and listening. This has led him to explore performance and theatrical interactions in his work.

Joanna talks about her work by describing her family history – she creates tableaus that are like portraits of her past. Her piece, Sugarbaby Take Him These Ants Are Gonna Sting Me Sure as the World, is titled after her father’s first words.
