Students Take On Reclaim
This semester, sophomores Callie Bryan and Serena Dobson are working with Casey Whittier and alumni Maret Miller (graduated 2014) to initiate a sustainable reclaim project for ceramic waste with leftover clay and glazes around the department. They meet each Friday to slake and repurpose old clay into mold clay for the plaster room. As they work on this project, they are discussing ways that they can make the department’s use of materials even less wasteful.
One of the most significant ways to make the department more green is to find ways to use clay that has otherwise been abandoned: through personal projects with students, using the clay for plaster molds, making tiles for community installations, and finding outside organizations to utilize the clay supply that we have.
Moving throughout the year, the ceramics department will continue to explore these avenues.
