Dr. Margaret Carney Comes to KCAI
Dr. Margaret Carney from the Blair Museum of Lithophanes came to the ceramics department this month to give a lecture about these dazzling objects. Lithophanes are thin translucent porcelain tiles that are made from a mold and, when back-lit, display an image that depends on the varying thicknesses of the porcelain.
The Blair Museum of Lithophanes is the only museum in the United States devoted to this process, founded by Laurel Blair, a collector for which the museum was named.
Dr. Carney is the curator of the museum and has recently written one of the few books about these prized objects.
